As ADA-approved techniques intended to enhance patient comfort, our sedation dentistry options do not usually produce serious side effects. During oral-conscious sedation, a medication in pill form is ingested prior to treatment and should induce a state of deep relaxation. You will be conscious and able to respond to directions, but most patients have no memory of their procedure afterward. While they very rarely occur, potential side effects may include mild dizziness, nausea, headaches, or dry mouth. The sedative effects may linger after your appointment is over, so a friend or loved one will need to drive you home. Our other sedation dentistry option involves intravenous (twilight) sedation, which is designed to deliver medications directly into your bloodstream. This generally creates an incredibly restful state, so much so that some patients may fall asleep. Again, you will need to be driven home by a friend and some post-treatment drowsiness may arise; however, individuals do not typically report lasting side effects.
All of our sedation methods are monitored by our board-certified anesthesiologist to help ensure an optimal level of safety and control. If you have questions about how sedation dentistry can complement your treatment, please contact our practice for more information.
